David H Levy, Ph.D., is one of the most enthusiastic, successful and famous amateur astronomers of our time. Among David’s accomplishments are a few hundred shared asteroid discoveries (asteroid Levy 3673 was named in his honor) and 23 comet discoveries, some of which he spotted using telescopes in his own back yard. His most famous discovery, Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 which collided with Jupiter in 1994, was made with Eugene and Carolyn Shoemaker at the Palomar Observatory in California. Although he has never taken a class in astronomy, he has written over three dozen books, numerous articles for astronomy magazines, was Science Editor of Parade Magazine for nearly 10 years, and is currently the editor of the web magazine, Sky’s Up! David has been awarded five honorary doctorates in science and received a Ph.D. based on a dissertation that examined astronomy in English literature. He has appeared on television programs, been featured on the Discovery and the Science Channels, and received an Emmy for the documentary, Three Minutes to Impact. Together with wife Wendee Levy, David founded The National Sharing the Sky Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring and teaching others to reach for the stars through lectures and other educational activities. In his most recent book, “A Nightwatchman’s Journey: The Road Not Taken,” David discusses his astronomical adventures and how he overcame his struggle with depression to accomplish all that he has in astronomy. David is originally from Canada, now lives in Arizona, and continues to explore the wonders of the night sky.
