Chinese is one of the 15 critical languages identified by the U.S. State Department. It is also one of the most difficult languages to acquire. A pictographic written system that relies on four tones in conversation (one character can have four meanings depending on each tone), it is richly complex. Combined with other characters as set phrases, the four meanings blossom into myriad implications. As linguistic research has proven, a child before about age 11 can easily pick up a foreign language with near-perfect, native-speaker-like intonation. We are proud to make available this first introductory Chinese language class for grades 3 and up. We will conclude with a festive session featuring an introduction to how you make dumplings. This course if offered by renowned linguist, Dr. Keming Liu-Riley, whose books of Chinese poetry in translation are being adopted by universities in Hong Kong and Europe.
Dr. Keming Liu-Riley is a professor at the City of New York and an internationally renowned translator of Chinese Literature into English, as well as English Literature (including Henry James) into Chinese. She spearheaded the effort to bring Chinese culture to CUNY campuses and has lead successful tours for students and faculty in China. She lives, writes, and gardens in Cutchogue.
